As someone who grew up in South Australia and cut their teeth on Coopers home brew kits, a visit to the Coopers Brewery in Regency Park feels less like a brewery tour and more like a pilgrimage. But even with that familiarity, I wasn’t quite prepared for just how impressive the new Visitor Centre is. It’s sleek, spacious, and built with the same care and pride that’s gone into every Coopers beer since the 1860s.

We joined the 4pm Coopers Visitor Centre Tour, a one-hour guided experience that explores the history of the company, the fundamentals of brewing, and finishes with a curated beer tasting. At $35 a head, it’s great value for what you get, and our guide Liam was a standout.

Friendly, down-to-earth, and full of stories, he made the hour fly by.

Coopers: A Proudly Independent Tradition

Coopers isn’t just the largest Australian-owned brewery, it’s one of the country’s longest-surviving brewing families, with six generations of Coopers involved since the very beginning. It all started with Thomas Cooper, a stonemason who in 1862 brewed a batch of ale for his ailing wife using a family recipe and local ingredients. That batch turned out so well that demand quickly followed, and a small commercial brewing operation was born in the Adelaide suburb of Norwood.

The brewery remained family-owned through thick and thin, weathering market shifts, takeovers, relocations, and industrial changes. In the early 2000s, Coopers famously resisted a hostile takeover bid from Lion Nathan, strengthening their independence and deepening public support. That independence is more than a point of pride, it’s part of the DNA of every Coopers product.

Brewing decisions are made in-house, based on quality and tradition, not global boardroom trends.

Today, their beers are still bottle-conditioned, meaning the fermentation continues after packaging, a distinctive point of difference that sets Coopers apart. It gives their beers a natural cloudy appearance, more depth in flavour, and the “Best After” date on the bottle vs a best before of most other brands.

Stepping Into the Brewery

The Visitor Centre is located at Coopers’ purpose-built facility in Regency Park, just north of Adelaide’s CBD. From the moment you arrive, it’s clear this isn’t just a working brewery, it’s a carefully designed destination. The outdoor spaces are neat and open, dotted with small gardens, artful barrel sculptures, and cheeky quotes from the late Glen Cooper.

Inside, the space blends history and modernity with surprising warmth. Timber panelling, curved glass, frosted signage and copper finishes give it a welcoming, considered feel. You’re met with a full row of Coopers beers on tap, a long bar, and museum-style installations dotted around the building – everything from old brewing tools to historic delivery trucks to an intricately detailed LEGO replica of the entire site.

The displays tell the story of beer in South Australia, the family’s brewing roots, and the science behind hops, malts and fermentation. If you’ve ever wondered what diacetyl smells like, there’s even a section to find out.

Brewing, Whiskey, and What’s Coming Next

The tour took us through the Visitor Centre’s microbrewery; a small-scale setup designed for brewing experimental batches and small releases. It’s here that Coopers is also distilling its own whisky, with old bourbon barrels now ageing the whiskey directly beneath the tasting room. You can peer through a massive glass barrel on the terrace and gaze down at rows of resting casks, a literal window into the future of the Coopers brand.

They’ve taken the same meticulous approach to whisky as they have to beer, using their existing knowledge of malting and fermentation to craft something uniquely Australian. It’s still a few years away from release, but you get the sense that when it arrives, it’ll be worth the wait.

The Tasting – A Cold Beer at Just the Right time

After the tour, we were seated for a structured tasting of three iconic Coopers beers: Australian Lager, Sparkling Ale, and Dark Ale. Each beer came with tasting notes and was presented in proper tasting glassware. It was a good selection, the Lager was crisp with a citrusy finish, the Sparkling Ale bold and floral, and the Dark Ale rich with roasted malt.

But the showstopper came afterwards: the Smoked Porter. Ordered at the bar, it was an absolute standout – smooth, warming, and layered with notes of oak and whisky, almost like sipping a good Scotch on a cold night. For $10 a pint, it was exceptional value and a fitting end to the visit.

The tap lineup featured both staples and special releases, with everything from XPA and Pale Ale to seasonal brews and small batch labels. Seeing the full Coopers family lined up in one place was a great reminder of just how broad their range has become over the years.

The South Australian Checkpoint You Shouldn’t Miss

Coopers have managed to do something rare, balance heritage with innovation, and tradition with hospitality. Whether you’re a beer lover, a home brewer, or just someone curious about how things are made, the Coopers Brewery tour is genuinely worth doing.

The space is beautiful, the storytelling is clear, and the tasting session hits all the right notes. You don’t need to be a beer nerd to enjoy it – just bring your curiosity (and maybe a designated driver).

For me, as someone who grew up drinking Coopers and brewing their kits at home, this felt like a celebration of South Australian ingenuity. And with whisky maturing quietly in the barrels below, there’s every reason to come back and do it all again.
